About Jean Bennett
I initialy trained in art and design speacialising in textiles. I then went on to train as an art therapist which directly affected my artwork in that it became more personal. I spent a year exploring figurative sculpture and moulding techniques, I then went on to incorporate textiles and the figure which remains the inspiration for current and past work. Stitching and sculpture fill me with a sense of accomplishment and integrity, thus proving a most amenable vehicle for translating inner vision to outer reality. I stitch and sculpt from the inside out. I work quite deliberately, consciously employing both traditional and inovative techniques. The concrete, repetitive ( particulary stitching) nature of the work frees my imagination and provides opportunities throughout the process for the mayterials to dictate in some instaces the direction the work takes. My influences are everything I see, feel and experience but i love classical sculpture particularly Rodin, and Michelangelo and the sculptures to this day remain fragments of figures emerging from solid material. Each person will take someting different from the work and I am happy that you the viewer have seen and responded!
